Usage of Nylon AF80 Aramid
in CAS

Mechanical sensors holders, body of these sensors and little motors for high pressure chamber

Traditionally, additive manufacturing is used in fields such as automotive or packaging. For this time, 3D printing was applied in a very specific science – geology. Tomas Feřtek, a research engineer from department of Laboratory of mechanical properties of rocks in Institute of Geology of the CAS uses this technology primarily for production of mechanical sensors holders, body of these sensors and little motors for high pressure chamber. Institute of Geology is one of the first institution testing our new Nylon AF80 Aramid. We talked with Mr. Feřtek about the quality of this filament and its printing properties.

WHAT WAS THE MAIN REASON YOU STARTED 3D PRINTING?

The main reason is the price of printed part comparing to the part produced on milling machine. The difference is significant. If we want to test new sensors, we can print them faster and cheaper than being manufactured by an external company. Another main reason is that the printed object can be optimized and modified.

HOW WOULD YOU RATE PRINTING IN NEW NYLON AF80 ARAMID?

Printing in Nylon AF80 Aramid was very successful, the filament has a very good interlayer adhesion. The object looks very esthetic. In general, the composites create a beautiful matte and continuous surface. It is very important to use the right adhesive glue I would rather recommend printing on professional printers with heated chambers than conventional printers. I have printed in Nylon AF80 Aramid with the same settings as ABS Extrafill. The exception was the temperature of the hot bed that was set on 140 ° C. The fact that the material does not strike was really surprising. And even if there was some stringing, it was easy to peel off the model. Cooling of the object should be slow to avoid deformation by rapid temperature drop.

WHAT ARE THE PRINTED OBJECTS USED FOR?

The parts are used to measure seismic waves on rock balls in high-pressure chamber. There are three parts together. Two „paws “composed of the sensors and the little motor holder which pulls the paws to each other causing the sensors are pressed to the ball. On the motor holder there is a linear potentiometer, that serves as a press sensor. For this application it was important to have material that is abrasion resistant and chemicals resistant. Nylon AF80 Aramid fulfilled these conditions for 100%.

HAVE 3D PRINTING SOLVED ANY PROBLEM?

3D printing has helped us to reduce costs, speed up the production and has allowed us to produced end components without an external company.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ON OUR BRAND?

We choose Fillamentum because it is a Czech brand, that produce wide range of professional materials and puts a special impact on the quality of its filaments.
