Shoplight is a pioneer in lighting solutions and specializes in lighting retail spaces for global and British brands, such as LEGO, Skechers, and GANT. Shoplight’s recent collaboration with Fillamentum using NonOilen® material is a testament to its innovative approach as it strives to be environmentally conscious as well as technologically advanced. This case study thus explores the journey that led to their breakthrough product NORT, designed to not only revolutionize lighting but also set new trends and standards in sustainability.

A Way to Better Future

Shoplight’s drive to reduce carbon emissions led it to seek alternatives to traditional aluminum spotlight manufacturing. And what was the result? The NORT! This product is a track-mounted spotlight that boasts remarkable performance with minimal environmental impact thanks to the revolutionary NonOilen material. The collaboration was established about a year ago when Shoplight, in collaboration with consultants Hexa-Cubed, chose NonOilen® for its sustainability and impressive thermal and mechanical properties.

"Green" Lighting

The impact of the NORT product is very impressive indeed. Major UK companies such as GAIL’s Bakery have used NORT for their new stores. In addition, luxury shopping outlets across the EU, managed by Value Retail, including locations such as Maasmechelen in Belgium and Bicester in the UK, have incorporated NORT into their strategy. Shoplight’s NORT has attracted interest from various retail giants, indicating its growing influence in the sector.

NORT legacy

NORT is not just a lighting product. It is a circulation management solution designed for long-term use. In the Cambridge store, NORT uses high-quality lighting to highlight focal points such as pastry stands, menu boards, and customer tables. In addition, its modular design makes it easy to upgrade, optimize, and repair. At the end of its life cycle, NORT components can be recycled, thus embodying the concept of a true circular economy.

Why 3D printing?

3D printing is in line with Shoplight’s environmental goals. This technology allows us to minimize waste and meet our client’s bespoke requirements. With a fleet of machines such as the MK3S, MK4, and Construct 3D large format printer, Shoplight harnesses the power of technology to support its sustainability-focused mission.

The positive reception of NonOilen filament has led Shoplight to explore its full potential. While the initial success of NORT was driven by the material, Shoplight’s curiosity was piqued by the prospect of experimenting with different colors of NonOilen. That’s right – Shoplight was one of the first customers to be able to try out NonOilen color variants, which are still in the development phase from the point of view of our R&D department. This opens up new possibilities for creativity and customization.

Temperature: Another Advantage of NonOilen®

Bioplastics present a unique challenge when it comes to heat management, especially when used in conjunction with LED light sources. Shoplight’s patent-pending Ventech system combined with the properties of NonOilen has led to breakthrough success. NORT’s thermal performance at 35°C surpasses that of conventional aluminum products at 25°C, underlining the innovation in both material and design. However, it should also be noted that this is not the limit of this material, as its thermal resistance is up to 120 °C.

Conclusion

Shoplight’s journey from envisioning a greener lighting solution to using our NonOilen material embodies the spirit of innovation and sustainability. The Nort product thus serves as a shining example tho how forward-thinking businesses can combine technology and environmental consciousness to create products that not only illuminate spaces but also illuminate a better future for our planet. We at Fillamentum are passionate about these steps and wish Shoplight and like-minded companies every success.
