Fillamentum was part of a performance that brought Simon Cowell to his feet. The mastermind behind this was a young Dutch artist, Daniel Simu. He handcrafted an acrobatic robot, which became his proud partner during his performance on America’s Got Talent. And what’s more, our perfect Flexfill TPU 98A material played a crucial role in creating the robot’s hands, feet, and motor mounts.

Who is Daniel?

Daniel Simu, a Dutch artist, is known for his creativity and ability to turn his ideas into reality. His interest in circus arts began at an early age, fascinated by acrobatics and juggling. After the COVID-19 pandemic, Daniel decided to take matters into his own hands, quite literally. “Towards the end of the COVID crisis, I no longer had an acrobatics partner to train with. As a fun exercise, I figured I’d build myself a robot that could perform tricks with me,” says Daniel.

The Robot Construction Process

Daniel’s circus robot, known as Acrobot, is the result of meticulous planning and innovative thinking. The first version of the robot had hands made from a second-hand mannequin, which had several shortcomings. “They were not in the exact pose I wanted them, they were brittle and could break when they hit the floor, and they were difficult to connect to the arms I had designed,” explains Daniel. After deciding on 3D printing, he found the ideal material for making the hands and motor mounts – Flexfill TPU 98A by Fillamentum. This material was not only strong but also flexible, which helped to minimize strain on the motor gearboxes.

Performing in Various Shows

Acrobot soon became a star of various performances. Daniel and his robot appeared at many festivals and shows, demonstrating unique acrobatic tricks. The audience was fascinated by the robot, which not only mastered complex movements but also synchronized with Daniel’s acrobatic acts. “For both these challenges, Flexfill TPU 98A turns out to be the perfect solution,” adds Daniel, highlighting the importance of high-quality material for the success of his performances.

America's Got Talent

Daniel’s and his robot’s success culminated in their participation in the popular show America’s Got Talent. Their performance to the song “Move Your Feet” by Junior Senior charmed the audience and earned admiration from even the strict judge Simon Cowell. Although judge Heidi Klum gave an X buzzer and voted NO, it didn’t change the outcome. Daniel advanced to the next round, hearing 3 YESes at the end of the performance. The host, Terry Crews, was also thrilled by the performance. “Simon Cowell calls this performance ‘one of the funniest things’ he’s seen all year!” These words confirm the incredible impression Daniel and his Acrobot left on the judges and viewers.

Wishing the Best of Luck

Fillamentum is proud to be part of such an inspiring project as Daniel’s Acrobot. We are thrilled that our Flexfill TPU 98A material helped create something so unique and innovative. We wish Daniel much success in his future endeavors and look forward to his next projects, which will surely captivate and inspire many other artists.
