At Instituto Pedro Nunes (IPN), innovation meets sustainability in a groundbreaking 3D printing project. This collaborative initiative showcases the capabilities of Fillamentum’s high-quality filaments while celebrating the transformative potential of modern technology.

Crafting the Future of Urban Mobility

IPN recently completed an intricate 3D-printed replica of the Metrobus, a revolutionary electric public transport system designed to enhance mobility in the Coimbra region. The model, built to a precise 1:25 scale, measures approximately 750 mm in length and 115 mm in width. Its creation involved more than 380 3D-printed components and 580 meters of sustainable filament, emphasizing IPN’s commitment to environmental responsibility.

Unmatched Detail and Functionality

This replica goes beyond static representation. It features:

  • Articulated structure: Reflecting the real vehicle’s functionality.

  • Functional wheels and hinged doors: For an authentic, tactile experience.

  • Removable roofs: Allowing detailed exploration of the interior.

The project’s meticulous design and assembly highlight Fillamentum’s filament capabilities, including precision, strength, and vibrant color options. 

Promoting Inclusivity Through Design

A standout feature of this project is its social impact. Designed with inclusivity in mind, the Metrobus model allows visually impaired users to engage in tactile exploration of the vehicle’s interior. By removing the roofs, users can explore the layout, seating arrangements, and design elements through touch, making this a truly inclusive educational tool.

About Metrobus

The Metrobus, project by Metro Mondego, is set to redefine urban mobility in Coimbra, Miranda do Corvo, and Lousã. This fully electric transport system features 42 stations across 42 km, supporting urban and suburban connectivity. With eco-friendly vehicles that accommodate up to 136 passengers, the Metrobus promises reduced noise, improved air quality, and greater efficiency for daily commuters.
